Adult neurological conditions
Strokes
We regularly see people as soon as they are discharged from hospital after their stroke, and this helps instill more normal ways of moving from the outset.
A stroke can occur at any age and can be life changing. Those with minor strokes tend to find their balance is impaired and those with more major strokes can suffer weakness and paralysis, sometimes loss of sensation, and visual field deficits. We have over 30 years experience helping people, who have had a stroke regain their independence, with some being able to resume their employment.
Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple Sclerosis is a progressive condition. We are able to offer advice and treatment for all stages of the disease starting from initial diagnosis to treating the symptoms. Patients can be seen both in clinic and at home.
We are pleased to be partnered with Bexley & Dartford MS Society who are able to subsidise treatment sessions for those meeting specific criteria. If you want to find out more, please contact us. To access the subsidised scheme you will need to provide a clinic letter confirming your diagnosis and home address.
Parkinson’s Disease
Research shows that exercise based therapy can help people with Parkinson’s disease regain and then maintain skills. We favour using LSVT BIG, this is a 4 week intensive programme which helps imbed a Parkinson’s specific exercise programme and seeks to address any challenges you have, whether it be balance, writing, doing up buttons or pulling on socks.
We work with you to improve both “fine motor” skills, like doing up buttons, and “large motor” tasks like walking. Early intervention is recommended so that good habits can be put in place.
Head and Brain Injuries
We are experienced in seeing those who have recently suffered a brain injury, and those who might have suffered a brain injury as a child, and now as an adult are experiencing new problems or challenges.
Spinal Cord and Cauda Equina Injuries
We can offer people with complete and incomplete spinal cord injuries help with maintenance programmes and active rehabilitation. Our physiotherapy assistants can assist with the maintenance programmes in your home environment.
Cerebral Palsy in adulthood
Patients suffering with Cerebral Palsy often experience difficulties in adulthood when their balance or walking can start to deteriorate. We would conduct a thorough assessment, to help determine how best to improve your symptoms.
Ataxia and Coordination Disorders
You may find your balance and co-ordination of movement is affected by a neurological disorder. We see a number of people with ataxia and will seek to help improve your symptoms and give advice and support on managing them.
Motor Neurone Disease
Motor Neurone Disease is a progressive condition causing muscle weakness and stiffness. We are able to support you through all stages of the disease, helping maximise your independence for as long as possible, and assisting with exercises to limit stiffness in your limbs.
Guillain-Barré Syndrome
Guillain Barre Syndrome is a rare nervous system condition, which causes numbness and weakness in your feet, hands and limbs. We are able to provide you with a structured exercise programme to maximise your recovery.
Brain tumour
We are able to support those with progressive brain tumours and provide rehabilitation for those with benign brain tumours, whose surgery may have left them with a level of disability.
Transverse Myelitis
Transverse Myelitis is a rare condition with a tremendous variability in the presentation of symptoms. We are able to provide assessment and treatment to help you maximise your physical independence and to manage the associated symptoms.
